Eid El-Kabir: FRSC urges motorists to observe traffic laws

Mrs Stella Uchegbu, Federal Road Safety Commission Public Education Officer, said the commission would not
hesitate to prosecute traffic offenders irrespective of their status during the Eid-El-Kabir festival.
Uchegbu said this on Friday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the commission’s plan to ensure safety on the nation’s road during the festival.
According to Uchegbu, most of the road accidents arise from non-compliance to traffic rules by motorists.
She said that wrong attitudinal approach to traffic rules by motorists while in motion was one of the major causes of accidents on Nigeria roads.
The FRSC’s public education officer said the commission was determined to enforce zero tolerance to indiscipline on roads.
“Some motorists believe that excessive speed in the last quarter of the year will make them recover what they have not got in the first three quarters.
“This and other reasons account for increase in road traffic crashes in the last quarter of the year and FRSC is always prepared to reduce crashes to the barest minimum.
“We are continuously sensitising the public through mass media and flyers in order to reduce accident on our roads.
“Any motorist that is convicted will have his or her name written as a convict, that is why we have mobile court to try traffic offenders,” she said.
Uchegbu urged motorists to abide by all the traffic rules and regulations because the FRSC would continue to ensure sanity on the nation’s roads, especially during the festive period.
She said henceforth, radar guns would be used by the commission to get the details of motorists that failed to obey traffic instructions of its personnel.
According to Uchegbu, the radar gun is a GPS device that will automatically give details of the vehicle owner once it captures the number plate.
NAN recalls that FRSC has concluded plans to deploy 18,000 personnel and 918 vehicles for a nationwide exercise
called ‘Operation Eid-El-Kabir’ slated for Sept. 30 to Oct. 12.
In a related development, Mrs Susan Ajenge, the FRSC FCT Sector Commander, told NAN that 500 personnel would be deployed to the territory during the Eid-El-Kabir.
According to her, the FCT command is working round the clock to ensure crash-free Salah in the territory.
