The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University chapter, on Friday lauded the management for paying the June and July salaries of its members.

Saheed Oseni, the Chairman of the union, told NAN that the salaries, which were earlier withheld, were paid on 3 October.

SSANU-LASU had on 26 May embarked on a comprehensive strike but suspended it on 1 August, after reaching an agreement with the school management and governing council.

The university authorities had withheld the June and July salaries of the union members, in line with the ‘no work, no pay’ policy of the Lagos State Government.

In September, the association frowned at the non-payment of the salaries and said it could consider withdrawing its services if they were not paid.

Oseni told NAN he was happy the management had yielded and paid the salaries. “The salary payment was a right step by the management as it has brought peace and stability on the campus and enabled members to meet family needs,” he said.

Oseni said the June salary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LASU chapter, its sister union, had also been paid.

The chairman, however, urged the university authorities to meet other pending demands of the union as agreed.

“Our promotion issue is still pending because the governing council has not met to deliberate on it,” he said.

Oseni expressed optimism that when the council meets on Oct. 15, the promotion issue would be resolved.
