YABATECH Students Protest Over Exams

Damilare Okunola

Students of Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Yaba, Lagos, Friday morning, staged a peaceful protest to demand the postponement of their examination by a week.

Students who spoke with our correspondent said they demanded an extension by a week to enable them prepare adequately for the exams after the lecturers rushed them within a very short period.

‘Tega Sapele, the institution’s Students’ Union Government, SUG, Social Director, when contacted, said: “We want the management to extend commencement of our examination by one week.”

Another source close to the SUG leadership, informed that the students want the examination date shifted because they were not prepared for the exams.

“The issues surrounding the protest aren’t serious in nature. That was why we didn’t take it too far.

“Some students just wrote tests, others are yet to settle down. As we all know, the ASUP strike was called off barely three months ago.

“So, we only wanted the management to extend the commencement of our exams to allow everybody prepare adequately,” he said.

The source who pleaded anonymity explained that the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Mr. Omobayo Raheem, waded into the issue and that calm was restored almost immediately.

“The DSA has come to the students’ aid and has asked them to ‘sheathe their swords’ as he would be meeting with the board to see how to reach a compromise.

“He promised to get back to us later today to convey details of their discussion. The protest was a mild one,” he added.
