Championship strugglers Bolton appointed former Celtic boss Neil Lennon as their new manager on Sunday.

Lennon had been looking for a job since surprisingly quitting Scottish champions Celtic at the end of last season and he has settled on the out-of-form English second tier team.

The 43-year old Northern Irishman replaces Dougie Freedman, who left Bolton by mutual consent at the beginning of the month.

Wanderers also announced that Lennon’s former Celtic assistant Johan Mjallby and Garry Parker will join him at the Macron Stadium.

During his four-year spell at Parkhead, Lennon steered Celtic to three league titles, two Scottish Cups and a memorable victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Lennon was approached by the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad over the past fortnight but opted against a move to the Middle East.

He was also believed to be in the frame to replace Felix Magath at Fulham but eventually opted for Bolton.

The former Crewe and Leicester midfielder will officially take the helm at Bolton on Monday, with the length of his contract undisclosed.

In a statement on their official website, Bolton said: “Following a process of first and second interviews with a shortlist of initial candidates, a unanimous decision was taken by Eddie Davies, Brett Warburton and Phil Gartside.

“The club are delighted and excited to appoint Neil Lennon. He brings with him experience at the highest level and an infectious enthusiasm to take the club forward.”

Bolton have won only one of their 11 league matches this season, leaving them bottom of the table ahead of Lennon’s first match at fellow strugglers Birmingham on Saturday.
