World Bank President Jim Kim said on Tuesday in Addis Ababa that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa required additional 5,000 health workers.
Jim said at a news conference with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and AU Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in Addis Ababa that health workers were critical for effective control of Ebola outbreak.
“We need 5,000 health workers who must rotate,” he said.
He expressed concern over how to find the health workers with the fear factor going out of control in so many places.
Jim challenged all medical practitioners around the world to keep to their oath to provide treatment.
Dlamini-Zuma said the AU had mobilised 2,000 health workers.
Ban said he was worried about the “stigmatisation” of health workers returning from humanitarian missions in West Africa.
Meanwhile in Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO was in contact with the UN to discuss whether it could play a role in the fight against the disease.
He stressed the efforts that were being made by NATO member countries.
