Politicking Without Manifestoes

Editorial

Barely seven weeks to the Presidential election on 14 February, Nigerians still do not know what the candidates intend to do if elected into office. Neither the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, nor the All Progressives Congress, APC, or any other political party, has come out with a clear idea on various sectors of the economy.

Presidential candidates have been known for weeks now but while they have been attacking each other via their publicity and media arms on social media platforms and on the pages of newspapers, nothing concrete has been sold to Nigerians on policy formulation.

Nigerians still do not know how the candidates intend to boost our crumbling economy or reduce the skyrocketing unemployment level. Many still do not know how the 10 million Nigerian students right now out of school would gain employment or how the fallen standard in our education system would be improved.

The majority of the citizens also do not know the tax regimes that candidates are proposing and how different their policies in the oil sector would be. This applies to all sectors of the economy where Nigerians do not have a clear understanding of what Muhammadu Buhari or Goodluck Jonathan intend to do.

We believe that politics without ideas or policies is not the right way to go. Since it is barely seven weeks to the presidential election, we urge candidates to come out with pragmatic ideas rather than wasting resources and people’s time attacking one another.
