UNILAG Student  Killed Over Arsenal Match

Damilare Okunola

The unidentified student of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, who was shot dead on Tuesday night, may have been killed after an argument over the ouster of Arsenal FC from theUEFA Champions League same day.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by P.M. NEWS Campus Square, the young man was shot dead after an argument with one of his friends over the outcome of the football match which the English Premier League giants won 0-2 against Monaco but could not qualify for the next phase of the competition after initially losing 3-1 at home to the French Ligue 1 side.

Contrary to reports by some sections of the media that the student was shot by cult members ahead of the institution’s forthcoming Students Union Government, SUG, elections, sources within the institution disclosed that it was a case of ‘good boys turned bad’.

“I have been in the institution for a while now and I can tell you when a particular thing is the cause of trouble in this institution,” said a former President of one of the hostels in the institution, who pleaded anonymity.

“That guy who was killed was not murdered by cultists. It was a case of football argument after the Arsenal/Monaco match on Tuesday night.

“People have been talking about cultists being in UNILAG, but I totally disagree with them on this. And even if they are in the institution, they do not carry out their activities within the school premises.

“So, there was no way a cultist would have killed a student of the institution right in front of the Amphitheatre,” the source added.

When reminded that the late student was contesting the post of a Social Director in the institution’s forthcoming SUG election, our impeccable source noted that, “that was mere speculation.

“Campaigns toward the elections are yet to experience any level of intensity so there is no way any student would have killed his colleague when our school is not violence-laden or a beehive of cult activities.

“The only thing which has not been established here is the name of the student. The moment we get this, many speculations would be laid to rest.”

Efforts by our correspondent to get the name, department and level of the student proved futile as the students were reluctant to give out any information about their slain colleague.
