LASPOTECH Students Bemoan Result Anomalies

Harrison Iyoha

Students of the Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, Ikorodu main campus Mass Communication Department School of Part-Time Studies Regular (SPTSR) are set for a showdown with the management of the institution over the recently released results of graduating students which the majority of them failed woefully.

P.M.NEWS Campus Square gathered that after the school had previously released a result which the students were still trying to come to terms with, news filtered in that the released result had been cancelled by the school examination body since they were not carried along before the first set of results was released.

After the cancellation, a new set of results was released and the students are now disgusted with the newly released examination results.

In separate chats with our reporter, some of the students accused the school management of being wicked as the students claimed to be treated like animals on the streets.

They accused the school management of desperately looking for money to run the school and therefore, came up with this malicious plan to extort money from them when they come back to rewrite the carryover courses.

The students also accused the school management of deliberately removing all the marks added to their scores by their various lecturers after marking, a situation which has resulted in mass failure and extra year for them.

An aggrieved student who pleaded anonymity said: “Can you imagine! A student saw his results last month only to find out just some days ago that his results had been tampered with.

“I was a little bit above upper credit before, but now that they have removed all the marks added, I have been relegated to lower credit while those who were having distinction fell to upper credit and those who were on lower crashed down to pass and those who were already celebrating that they graduated with pass now have to come and repeat and pay for extra year which has always been the target of the school.”

Tayo, another student of the institution, put the blame on his coordinator whom he claimed failed to intercede on behalf of the students.

He said: “when things like this happen, it is expected of the coordinator of the department to speak for his students. It is quite sad that the leadership and management of Lagos State Polytechnic under Mr. Abdulazeez Abioye Lawal, whom we thought was student-friendly did this to us at the tail end of his tenure.

“He is getting things wrong pertaining to the result of students in School of part-time regular studies ND3, 2014 set.

“As one of the aggrieved students who was affected by the new result released, I think it is a shame on the part of the management of the school to release two different results, its shows that the school is not well organised.

“What signals is the school sending to parents that want to send their children to the school?

“My grudge with them is this, when there is lack of communication between the department and the rector, there should be other ways to settle their misunderstandings amicably rather than the rector venting the anger on the students who don’t know anything about what is happening between the lecturers and the school management.

“In my own case when I was in ND2, my Gp was lower credit but I had the determination then to attain at least upper and I worked towards my goal.

“When the first set of results came out in February, I saw my result and it was 3.13 which was upper credit. To my surprise, when the results were released again, I found that I had 2.98 which is lower credit.

“After some investigation by some of us, we learnt that some marks which the department added to each course from our year 1 was deducted from our Gp.

“The rector has failed in his responsibility because he should have known about the added marks before now so that if there was any reservations about it, he would have rectified it early enough so that the students concerned would have known their stand.

“Now the decision of the Rector is making more than 70 students fail. We are pleading with Governor Babatunde Fashola to wade into this issue so that necessary adjustments can be made to the result or perhaps the first result should stand so that the number of those who failed will reduce.”

Kola, another affected students is not happy with his fellow students who have gone ahead to do their clearance when others are yet to know their fate.

“We all agreed to march to the department this week but some of my classmates who passed reneged on our decision and went for their clearance,” he fumed.

Our correspondent gathered that a student cried her eyes out as she found out that the 10 marks that were added to her Economics in her first semester final year exam was removed and caused her to have an extra year. Only 131 students graduated in a class of about 257 students.
