Sen Ashafa: With Jonathan, Inflation Will Wreck Nigeria

Senator Gbenga Ashafa

Vice Chairman Senate House Committee on  Land, Housing and Urban Development, Senator Gbenga Ashafa has said that the candidature of All Progressive Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari has united Nigerians more than ever.

Ashafa who also charged Nigerians to vote wisely, said with the current dwindling economy of the country, inflation would wreck Nigeria if President Goodluck Jonathan is allowed to stay in office beyond May 29, 2015.

Speaking while being conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Arewa communities in the 16 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos State, Ashafa said that there is no single sign that the nation is in safe hands with the current developments in every sector of the nation, saying next Saturday would afford Nigerians the opportunity to make a choice for a brighter and rewarding nation.

He said: “It is Almighty God that produced Buhari for Nigeria at this crucial time. He is the one that will rescue Nigerians from the shackle of poverty and corruption.  His candidature has united more Nigerians not only among the northerners but also among southerners. There is too much division between Nigerians, thank God that with Buhari, more Nigerians are now becoming united.

“The north and south, southwest are more united for a better leadership. Everyone is speaking one language which is change, everybody wants the election to hold and they want their votes count. We have never been this united in the calmour for leadership that will address corruption and other problems confronting us as a nation.”

Lamenting the devaluation of naira against the US dollar, Ashafa, who was honoured as Garukuwa (defender of the masses), said that inflation has ravaged the economy with the sudden increase in the prices of goods since most items in the country are imported.

He said: “Everything is now very expensive, dollar exchange for the  Naira was N160 before but a few weeks to the presidential election US dollar to Naira is now  N225. Therefore, we must not allow Nigeria  to be divided. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that  Nigeria remains a united entity.”

He warned Nigerian voters not to take or eat anything brought by unknown person on election day to enable them take part in the counting of their votes, saying that they may sleep off if they eat or drink tea brought by unknown persons.

“ At every polling booth they will count your votes, wait and see how it is being counted. Don’t take food or tea from PDP on election day. You may sleep off shortly after voting and they will rig the election. Don’t fight, fighting may give them the room to annul the election,” Ashafa added.
