Thousands of people in Jos, the capital of the central Nigerian state of Plateau, stormed banks on Friday to withdraw cash as the nation prepares for closely watched presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday.

Long queues could be seen at ATM machines and inside banking halls virtually everywhere in Jos.

“We don’t know what will happen,” said a customer at a Guaranty Trust Bank branch beside the British American Junction in Jos.

At the Independent National Electoral Commission, Deputy Director, Osaretin Imahiyereobo, said everything was set for the elections.

He said sensitive materials have been distributed virtually to all the local government areas with only one or two left.

Accreditation of journalists and observers has been completed, he said.

Security was tight especially between Plateau and Kaduna States. But the city seemed to be calm.
