Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has appointed Felix Obuah, the state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, as the sole administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Authority.
The appointment which takes immediate effect was contained in a statement issued by Opunabo Inko Tariah, said the appointment was made after the Governor paid an unscheduled visit to the office of the Authority along Ikwerre road.
During the visit Wike expressed disgust over the abysmal performance of the waste management authority and therefore gave the new sole administrator a 72 hour ultimatum to ensure that the refuse heaps that has dotted all major roads in the state capital were cleared with immediate effect.
Port Harcourt the state capital once reputed to be a Garden City had in the past few months turned into a garbage city due to the refusal of refuse contractors to clear the refuse due to over four months.
Wike had a meeting with the refuse contractors in Government House yesterday over the poor state of sanitation in the state capital. He was told that the sanitation authority was indebted to them to the tune of N1.8 Billion and they have surviving through bank credited facilities which they have exhausted.
It will be recalled that Obuah was described as the best chairman by Wike during campaign before the April 11 governorship election.
Only on Tuesday, Wike met with the sanitation contractors who are allegedly owed N1.8billion by the past government.
Also on Wednesday, the just inaugurated House of Assembly cleared names of some people nominated for commissionership.
Some of those screened by the Assembly include, Emma Okah, a Lawyer, former Chief Press Secretary to Ex-Governor Dr Peter Odili and was also a former Commissioner of Information under the short tenure of Sir Celestine Omehia and Emma Aguma, the State PDP lawyer, Fred Kpakol for Chairman Gokana local Government among others.
