Governor of Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, Malam Nasir El-Rufai on Thursday announced that the recent retirement of twenty permanent secretaries in the state public service does not mean his government has plans to sack civil servants in the state.

He said it would rather produce a more efficient civil service, and employ significant number of high quality teachers, doctors, nurses, traffic and environmental officers and other essential staff.

In a statement signed on his behalf by Samuel Aruwan, the Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, El-Rufai believes the government has the dual duty of eliminating redundancy and duplication and employing persons in the education and health sectors.

The statement further emphasized that workers diligently doing their jobs have nothing to fear.

According to him, the recent steps taken with regards to permanent secretaries have no bearing on the job security of civil servants, adding that permanent secretaries are political appointees and are therefore subject to the conditions pertaining to such appointees.

He explained that the new government inherited 35 permanent secretaries, and it was logical that the number had to reduce as the government is restructured.

According to the statement, “the government has streamlined ministries to 13 as part of measures to reduce the cost of governance, but the government has not appointed 13 new permanent secretaries. Media reports concerning such appointments are inaccurate.”

It said the number of permanent secretaries has accordingly been reduced to 18, adding that five out of the permanent secretaries affected were due to retire in the next few months but who willingly fast-tracked their departure.

The governor thanked the departing permanent secretaries for their contributions while in service and wished them the best in their future endeavours.
