Under Jose Mourinho’s watch Chelsea had always beaten Arsenal and once last season, both coaches had lost their cool in one of the league matches at Stamford Bridge.
But today, a special strike from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Wembley, changed the story.
The England international cut inside Cesar Azpilicueta in the 24rd minute and arrowed a shot into the top corner, giving Chelsea goalkeeper Thibault Courtois no chance.
It was a goal to grace the occasion and it gave Arsenal their fifth straight victory in pre-season – and by far their most significant.
Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud could have added a second but the better chances fell to Chelsea after Oxlade-Chamberlain’s opener.
Ramires squandered a free header, Eden Hazard fired a glorious chance over and Petr Cech denied Oscar and Kurt Zouma.
Arsenal have waited a while for a win over Chelsea and, although the Community Shield is no substitute for major honours, this victory can only bolster the self-belief in Arsène Wenger’s squad as they embark on a new campaign.
