The National President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions, Dr Jude Okolo, on Saturday said the body would spend N250 million on the construction of a cultural centre for the preservation of Igbo language and culture.
Okolo said at the inauguration of the project in Awka that each of the 21 local government areas of the state would have a gallery at the centre.
He also said that the centre would have a library, a hall and sporting facilities.
Okolo solicited for contributions from the state government and all Igbos, adding that the project was financed by 177 communities in the state.
He stressed that the association would continue to support the government and traditional institutions to ensure good governance and empowerment of people at the grassroots.
“The association has introduced some innovations to further support the good policies of government.
“We have constituted and inaugurated some committees to address problems on education, agriculture and for conflict resolution,” he said.
Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government, assured the association that government would continue to invest in the development of rural areas.
Obiano pledged government’s support for the project, and urged the group to always promote peace and unity in various communities across the state.
He also charged them to encourage moral values and good upbringing of children.
