Landlord, 75, charged with stealing

A 75-year-old landlord, Chief Kingdom Okpara Madueke, has been arrested and charged before Isolo Magistrates’ court for allegedly defrauding a prospective tenant, Chidi Nwanorim, in Lagos State, western Nigeria.

The incident happened at Ijeshatedo area and after his arraignment, he was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Lagos.

Chief Madueke, who is a native of Amokpara in Nkwere, Imo State allegedly defrauded Nwanorim of N170,000 under the false pretence of renting out a room and parlour apartment to him.

P.M.NEWS gathered that Madueke, is the landlord of two houses located at 28/30 Ehi street, Ijeshatedo where he wanted to rent vacant apartment to the complainant.

He allegedly reneged on his promise after collecting the money on the ground that he was told that Nwanorim was known in the area as a bad tenant.

Madueke allegedly rented the apartment to another tenant and refused to refund Nwanorim’s money when he requested for the refund.

The matter was reported to the police at Ijeshatedo Division and Madueke was arrested.

After his arrest he still insisted that he would not refund the money.

He was charged to court with obtaining under false pretence and stealing under the Criminal Code.
When Madueke was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Joy Ugbomoiko granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

He was remanded in custody pending when he will perfect his bail.

The matter was adjourned till 22 September, 2015.
