Former Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information and Publicity, Segun Olulade, has commiserated with the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, over the death of a notable Nigerian journalist, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, who was involved in the stampede that occurred in Saudi Arabia last Thursday.

Olulade representing Epe Constituency 2 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, while reacting through a statement, expressed deep sadness over the colossal calamity that claimed the lives of more than 700 pilgrims, including some Nigerians.

The lawmaker, who described the incident that claimed the lives of Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, Prof. Tijjani El-Miskin and others as a monumental tragedy, also sympathised with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), noting that the death of Hajiya Yusuf would leave a vacuum in the media community.

“I join other Nigerians to commiserate with the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists in mourning the death of one of them.

“I also extend sincere condolences to the families of the over 700 pilgrims who lost their lives in the sad occurrence in the holy land which occurred less than two weeks after a crane collapse in Mecca which claimed more than a hundred lives.

“As the first female editor from Northern Nigeria, who worked with the New Nigerian Newspapers and the Citizens Magazine in Kaduna, she will greatly be missed in the media profession.

“She was a great columnist, who I never missed her columns in both Daily Trust and LEADERSHIP newspapers.

“She was an exemplary, dedicated, knowledgeable, credible, highly-respected and outstanding editor who, even in death, will remain a glittering role model for living journalists, within and outside Nigeria,” Olulade added.

He, however, prayed that the Almighty God would, in His infinite mercy, grant all the deceased Aljanah Fridaus and also give their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.
