A 27-year-old man caught while stealing inside a medical doctor’s house has confessed that he was not a big time robber who steals in the night, saying he only steals in the day time in Lagos State, western Nigeria.
The suspect, Amos Joshua, was arrested and charged before a Magistrates’ court sitting in Ejigbo with burglary and felony under the criminal code.
He pleaded not guilty and explained that he was a petty thief who steals only in the day.
Joshua said he was not a violent thief and had no fixed address.
He said he sleeps anywhere in the night and wakes up in the morning to steal.
Joshua was caught at Oladipe Otesanya street, Fagbile Estate in Ijegun area in the morning where he broke into a medical doctor’s flat, Dr Afolarin Otesanya, to steal.
P.M.NEWS gathered that he had already broken the key to the entrance and had gone in to steal when luck ran out on him.
The owner of the house who wasn’t at home returned and met him inside the flat.
Otesanya locked him in the apartment and raised the alarm.
With the help of the residents, Joshua was caught and handed over to the police at Isheri Oshun Division.
At the station, Joshua confessed that he was a petty thief and he broke into the apartment because he had hoped the owner had gone to work.
He told the police that though he intended to steal from the apartment, he had not taken anything away before he was caught.
The police charged him to court where he pleaded guilty of committing the crime.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs J. O. E. Adeyemi ordered him to be remanded in prison custody at kirikiri.
The matter was further adjourned for fact and sentence.
