Some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Saturday gave support to President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to head the Ministry of Petroleum for socio-economic development of the nation.

Some of the lawmakers, who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, observed that the development would solve most of the economic challenges of the country.

According to them, having been a former head of the ministry with unblemioshed record, it will be in the interest of Nigerians.

Mr Adekanye Oladele (APC-Lagos Mainland) said “it is better for him (Buhari) to oversee Ministry of Petroleum. It is not the first time this is being done.

“Nigeria operates a monolithic economy and if you look at what has happened in the petroleum sector, you would see that it is better for him to oversee the ministry as he has headed it before.

Oladele said that the level of corruption would have pushed the president to head the ministry to make oil work for the masses.

The lawmaker said that Nigeria ought to have developed beyond where it is given its potential.

“Given the human and natural resources the country is blessed with, we are not supposed to be where we are now,’’ he said.

In his view, Mr Setonji David (APC-Badagry 2), said that the president meant well for the country.

David said that most nations that did not have half of the resources God endowed Nigeria with, lived a happier life.

“The president wants to bring about change in the condition of the masses and oil is the main stream of our earnings, so the change must start from there.

“If we still get it wrong in the oil sector, there is little or nothing we could do to create a prosperous and wealthy Nigeria.

“The level of brazen corruption and decadence we have experienced over the years in this sector of our economy makes it imperative to look for a pragmatic approach which can only be given by the president himself.

“The government is taking every necessary step to put smile on the faces of ordinary Nigerians through infrastructural development, employment and checking wastages,’’ he said.

David, however, urged Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State to provide more schools in Badagry as many students travelled far to access primary and secondary education.

Sharing similar sentiments, Mr Segun Olulade (APC-Epe), said that the president needed to take full control of the ministry because it was critical to fulfilment of all campaign promises.

Olulade said: “President Buhari needs to take full responsibility of the sector and that is exactly what he is doing to bring about the much desired change.’’
