The Nigeria Prisons Service on Wednesday denied the purported death of Charles Okah, the alleged mastermind of the 2010 Independence Day bombing in Abuja that claimed at least 7 lives.

Rumours and reports on the internet Wednesday afternoon had it that Okah died in prison shortly after he returned from court Tuesday where he attempted to kill himself .

The accused who had expressed frustration over his seemingly unending trial before Justice Kolawole on Tuesday and had attempted to commit suicide by jumping off from the third floor of the courtroom he was being tried located in the 5-storey building floor of Federal High Court, Abuja, before security operatives grabbed him.

This fuelled rumours that he may have committed suicide after he returned to prison custody. But while denying the rumours, Francis Enobore, the spokesperson of NPS said in a statement on Wednesday that the accused is hale and hearty.

“This is to officially respond to numerous media enquiries over the rumoured death of Mr. Charles Okah in prison custody.

“We wish to categorically state and clarify that Mr. Charles Okah is not dead but alive, hale and hearty under the safe custody of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS).”
