Pope Francis on Thursday issued a strong plea for the upcoming Paris climate change summit to reach a socially equitable agreement taking the poor into account.

“The misuse and destruction of the environment are also accompanied by a relentless process of exclusion”, the pontiff said at the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi.

He called for a transformational climate agreement based on the principles of solidarity, justice, equality and participation.

“It would be sad, and I dare say even catastrophic, were particular interests to prevail over the common good and lead to manipulating information in order to protect their own plans and projects”, Francis said.
