The excited crowd could not hold themselves, the smile radiated, the scream was thundering. The DJ on the wheel of steel understood the assignment at hand. This was the most sought-after show at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. It was a variety night, headlined by Falz; however, when I got to the venue, the young dazzling disc jockey, DeeJay Massive, was the star attraction.

His performance during the show on November 14th was electrifying. He skillfully manipulated sounds using effects such as reverbs, filters, and delays. The way he juggled the beat and transitioned between songs from different genres while maintaining perfect timing was mind-blowing. Every mix showcased his mastery behind the decks, leaving the audience in awe and solidifying his reputation as a true hit smasher.

With him on the decks, the crowd danced energetically to Falz’s biggest hits, turning the night into an electrifying spectacle. Notably, songs like “Soft Work,” “Karishika,” “Marry Me,” “Ello Bae,” and “Jamb Question (Remix)” had students vibing with synchronized hand gestures, stylish legwork, and playful storytelling movements that matched Falz’s witty lyrics.

During “Jamb Question,” couples playfully mimicked a question-and-answer exchange, while “Soft Work” had them grooving confidently, flexing their big-boy moves. The night was a perfect blend of humor, rhythm, and dance, making every beat a moment to remember. With his red cap on, tucked by his headset, this young beat maestro was focused on “killing it” like Falz commended.

Popularly known as DeeJay Massive but with the birth name Adetiloye Pius Ayodeji, he is a 500-level student of the Department of Crop, Soil, and Pest Management, Faculty of Agriculture, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). He hails from Ijare, Ondo State, yet had his early life in Akure, Ondo State. His deep love for music was shaped by an upbringing surrounded by Afrobeats, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and house music.

Inspired by icons such as Jazzy Jeff, Black Coffee, Carl Cox, and Martin Garrix, he is a self-taught DJ who started with the mastery of DJ hardware and later learned the software (Serato, Rekordbox, Ableton, and Logic Pro) in 2010—a year he termed the start of his greatness, with faith and resilience. He started learning fast while showcasing his DJing skills, too.

Apart from the Variety Night with Falz in November 2015, a year before that, on Friday, April 11th, 2014, with a boisterous atmosphere and electric performances from artists and Dee Jay himself, the soul could have been concluded to have left bodies in ecstasy during the Music Slam Dunk.

One of the most resounding moments of the event was the Rap Attack, which featured rap artists on the FUTA campus like Fols, Eazy, Mitch, Rhook, and others. This moment was full of flowing rhymes, ceasing times, and thrilling—yet enthralling—rhythms.

Through Dee Jay Massive’s sessions on the controller, bodies felt the rave as hit songs were played back-to-back—Davido’s “Dami Duro,” Wizkid’s “Caro,” Olamide’s “Awon Goons Mi” and “Story for the Gods,” Lil Kesh’s “Shoki,” Yemi Alade’s “Johnny,” D’banj’s “Oliver Twist,” Mavin’s “Dorobucci,” Davido’s “Aye,” MC Galaxy’s “Sekem,” and hit songs by FUTA students at the time. It’s not surprising that a year ago, Deejay Massive clenched his fists to the FUTASU award as the Best DJ of the Year, among numerous other awards on campus.

Two days after the event, the FUTA Sports Complex and other places on campus were still filled with the banners and posters of the event, knowing fully well that the FUTA magic fingers on the controller had made the day memorable, alongside the presence of the revered Falz the Bahd Guy.

DeeJay Massive has been well-spoken of as another pride of FUTA who hopes to shine brighter in the Nigerian entertainment industry like his idols. In the next decade, as Afrobeats garners more attention from the world with the rise of new stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Olamide, Dee Jay Massive will be ranked among the most sought-after Disc Jockeys in Nigeria and even in the West, exporting the culture, also, and contributing his quota to the industry.
