NASS to review girl-child education laws, says Sen. Wamakko

Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto) says the National Assembly would review laws to revamp girl-child education in the country in 2016.

NAN reports that Wamakko, who Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Educatio, disclosed this on Thursday in Sokoto at a media parley.

“In the incoming year, we will fine-tune all the education extant laws and enact new ones, with the view to revamping girl-child education across the nation.

“It is noteworthy here that the education ratio is in favour of the boy-child majority of the northern states, while it is in favour of the girl-child in most southern states, especially those in the south east,” he added.

Wamakko, who represents Sokoto Central Senatorial District, further promised that bridging the educational gender disparity gaps across the country was crucial to attaining the Education for All goals.

The lawmaker also promised to influence the allocation of the required funds for this purpose in the 2016 budget. “On the whole, we shall make deliberate efforts in 2016 to fully reposition all public schools across the country.

“This is to enable them to compete favourably with the private counterparts in Nigeria and abroad,” he added.

Wamakko further pledged to do everything humanly possible to revive the conduct of more meaningful research and development in the nation’s tertiary educational institutions.

“No nation can fully develop without properly focusing attention on R and D, especially in Science and Technology, and Nigeria should not be an exception,” he added.

Wamakko is also the immediate past governor of Sokoto state.
