A 53-year-old landlord, Oyeniyi Shittu, has been arrested and charged before Ejigbo Magistrates’ court for allegedly stealing his female tenant’s Tiger electricity generator in Lagos State, western Nigeria.
Shittu allegedly stole the N22,000 generator popularly known as ‘I better pass my neighbour’ belonging to Adeshina Bukola.
The incident happened at their residence located at 8, Olarewaju Adebayo Street in Igando, a suburb of Lagos.
P.M.NEWS gathered that after Bukola switched on her generator in the evening to supply electricity throughout the night and went to sleep, Shittu allegedly secretly went and removed the connecting cable and took the generator away.
In the morning, when Bukola went to where she kept the generator set, it was no longer there and she started looking for it.
During the search, Bukola was informed that it was Shittu that removed the set and took it away.
She confronted Shittu who denied and said he only removed the wire and left the generator there and went back to his apartment.
The matter was reported at Igando police division and Shittu made the same statement and was consequently arrested to provide the set.
When Shittu did not, he was charged to court with stealing under the Criminal Code.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty.
Counsel to Shittu, Barrister Omobolaji Adejumo informed the court that there was ulterior motive for arraigning Shittu in court by both the police and the complainant who is his tenant.
Adejumo said the Area ‘M’ Police Command, Idimu asked the IPO to transfer the matter to the Command following a petition, instead, Shittu was brought to court by the police at Igando division.
However, that did not dissuade the presiding Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola from releasing Shittu.
He was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
Shittu was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 21 March 2016.
The complainant left the court and said she was satisfied with the outcome of the court process.
