Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Edoror on Monday denied an allegation that his aides physically assaulted and beat up a bailiff of the Federal Court of Appeal.

Abraham Ifijeh, a bailiff from the Court of Appeal, Benin Division, had last week alleged that he was slapped, kicked and beaten up at the office of the Speaker when he went to serve court processes on both the clerk and the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

“I was surprised at the way they behaved at the Speaker’s office. I went to serve court services to both the Clerk and the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

“On getting there, the secretary collected the papers and said there was an order for them not to collect any papers from the Court of Appeal. I went to the Speaker’s office and there I was pushed out and beaten up,” Ifijeh said.

But speaking with journalists on Monday, ‎the Speaker said there was no such incident in his office and that he was hearing it from journalists, just as he explained that the House of Assembly that formulates law would not engage in any act that would subvert due process of law.

He however promised to investigate the alleged assault on the bailiff.

When asked why the seat of Estako West II was still vacant, despite a decision by the Court of Appeal that Sylvanus Eruaga of the Peoples Democratic Party was the duly elected candidate, Edoror explained that investigations were still on to authenticate the Certificate of Return issued to Eruaga by INEC.‎
