Ebonyi Speaker calls for sack of commissioners

The Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Francis Nwifuru, says legislators should recommend commissioners that are not performing for sack.
Nwifuru made the call when some committees of the Assembly submitted reports to plenary session in Abakaliki on Tuesday.
“The commissioners should not be allowed to derail the efforts of the government in developing the state.
“The interest of the state is paramount because the citizens will not want to hear long stories but results to complement government’s efforts and the sacrifices they are making”, he said.
The speaker described some of the state’s commissioners as incompetent and capable of derailing the lofty ideals of the Gov. Dave Umahi’s government.
“The huge resources of the state government are not effectively utilised in the various ministries by the respective commissioners.
“The legislators should be proactive in oversight functions to ensure that the commissioners lived up to expectations while sanctioning ineffective ones.
“In the ministries, you should be the chairmen while the commissioners are the secretaries. You should invite them at will because they are using the funds you appropriated”, he said.
He also said the legislators were not taking their oversight functions seriously as the commissioners needed to be monitored seriously.
Some of the committee reports submitted included those of Public Accounts, Works, Finance and Appropriation, among others.
