Lagos state government has restated its commitment to ensuring adequate funding of the health sector in order to improve its service delivery to the people, encourage medical personnel to do more research works and guarantee general health well being of the citizenry.

Lagos deputy governor, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule disclosed this at the weekend during the dinner and award ceremony organised by the Lagos State University Alumni Association in honour of its medical team, that successfully carried out the first kidney transplant, and presentation of recognition award to other distinguished members.

Adebule while commending the medical team for the job well done, assured that the state government is fully committed to providing an enabling environment that would help them to function more effectively and make health institutions in the state rank among the best in the world.

She added that the state government would not relent in encouraging and rewarding professionalism and productivity in all sectors of the public service, adding that advance research works in the health sector is critical to achieving government dream of building a reliable and functional health institution that will meet the health needs of a huge population of an emerging mega city.

The deputy governor stated that there is significant improvement in the services rendered in government health institutions across the state, noting that government is aware of some of the challenges that people faced in some government hospitals and assured that the state government would continue to invest in the health sector until those public health institutions have facilities that would help them to render best services to the people of the state.

“Our hospitals are not yet where they should be. Eventhough there is significant improvement in the services rendered in the government hospitals at present, it is the commitment of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration to fund the health sector efficiently such that our health institutions will have the best facilities that will help them to meet the health needs of the people,” she said.

While commending the new vice chancellor of the Lagos State University, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, for bringing sanity back to the institution, she stated that government is aware of various challenges he has to face to restore permanent peace in the crises rocked university, adding that with his competency, experience, hard work and strong determination, those problems would be solved in no distant time.

Earlier in his opening remarks, LASUTH Chief Medical Director (CMD) Professor Adewole Oke commended the state government for its reform of the health institutions, noting that government’s support to the hospital especially in the provision of modern equipment has contributed in no small way to the success recorded in the kidney transplant and other major operations successfully carried out by his medical team.

In his good will messages, Minister for Health, Prof Isaac Adewole expressed happiness over the state of health facilities in the state and commended the state government for its huge investment in the health sector, noting that the success recorded by the LASUTH medical team in Kidney transplant is an indication that government investment in the sector is not a waste.

He advised the state government to ensure that all the medical doctors that participated in the successful kidney transplant operation are handsomely rewarded so as to encourage more productivity.

The Minister who disclosed that about 80% of the federal budget on health is committed to research works in the health tertiary institutions, adding that the federal government would continue to support medical research works that can discover causes and prevention of diseases such a hypertension, renal disease, diabetes, cancer, kidney and heart failure and other terminal health diseases.

He noted that if the health sector is well funded and modern facilities are provided, most of the health issues over which Nigerians on daily basis embark on medical tourism abroad can be successfully treated at home and raise the standard of the hospitals.

He said the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will discourage medical tourism by supporting and upgrading facilities in public health institutions while necessary logistics would be provided to encourage them to strengthen their research base so as to record more successes in their medical practice.

The Minister warned that government would not hesitate to penalize any health instruction that gives unnecessary recommendation or approval for overseas medical trip for the treatment of an ailment that can be treated locally, noting that such practice would never encourage the growth of medical research which he said is necessary for the development of the local health institutions.

While advising health workers to always consider the sensitivity of their work to members of the public while pressing for their needs, the Minister urged them to always engage government in dialogue rather than an option of strike, disclosing that government has concluded plans to embark on no-work no-pay policy in all government health institutions.

He noted that many innocent lives have been lost in the past due to strike action by medical staff.

Adewole therefore called on heads of government health institutions to work closely with their personnel and always table their demands before government for necessary action.

The Minister called on other state governments to borrow a leaf from the Lagos state government by investing in the health sector and upgrade health facilities in the interest of the public.

The highlight of the ceremony was the award of excellence to doctors that distinguished themselves in their medical practice and other members of the public who have contributed to the growth of medical profession.
