The Police in Cross River said on Tuesday that a manhunt had been launched for some armed robbers who killed a Police Inspector in the state on Friday.

The police spokesman in the state, Mr John Eluu, disclosed this in an interview.

The police officer was shot dead by the armed robbers during a shootout while the hoodlums were robbing tourists in an hotel in Calabar.

According to Eluu, the police have also deployed intelligence officers in strategic places across the state to ensure the suspects were arrested.

“It is a pity that we lost one of our gallant officers during a shootout with the gang.

“We received a distress call on a robbery incident in one of the hotels in Calabar and we proceeded to the place.

“On getting there, the armed robbers opened fire and we responded back but unfortunately, one of our Inspectors was killed.

“We are not resting on our oars in the manhunt for the gang. We must arrest them and bring them to justice because it is a big offence to kill a police officer on duty.

“We are appealing to members of the public who know the hide-out of these criminals to help us with useful information that would help us clamp down on them,’’ he said.
