New FCT police boss assumes duty

Mr Alkali Usman, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) assumed office on Thursday at the command Headquarters, Abuja.

Usman, who took over from Mr Wilson Inalegwu was the immediate past commissioner of police in Delta command.

At a brief handover ceremony, the new CP said he would operate an open door policy for residents and other stakeholders for effective policing of the territory.

According to him, “I am going to operate an open door policy for all stakeholders in the FCT in checking crimes and criminality.”

The commissioner said he would sustain all effective strategies adopted by his predecessor to fight crime in the federal capital.

He added that crime prevention and control in every society was the responsibility of everyone and not the exclusive reserve for the police.

“Crime prevention and control is not the business of the police alone, I have the believe that we will do it together,” he said.

He promised to rely on the management team’s input to administer the command for effective security.

“I am going to continue to rely on the management team of the command’s contribution to run the command.

“If I fail, it will not be me alone,” he added.

He said he was ready to partner with residents of the territory to fight crimes.

Earlier, the out-gone Commissioner of Police, Inalegwu, said that the FCT, with over 16,000 officers, worked round the clock to ensure security.

He said that through the pro-activeness of officers and men, the command was able to burst two notorious gangs who specialised in robbing estates.

“Our partnership with sister agencies had helped in keeping security in the FCT,” he said.

Inalegwu said that the robust partnership with stakeholders in the territory had also helped the command in its mandate, stressing that “the police command in FCT has become the pride of residents.”

He then urged residents of the FCT to extend same cooperation given to him to the new commissioner for him to provide adequate security in the territory.

He also commended the media for their support in discharging his duty.

Inalegwu is to assume duty as the commandant of the Police College in Kaduna.
