Taxi driver docked for assaulting policeman

A 38-year-old commercial taxi driver, Iseuru Ekpe, who allegedly beat up a police officer, was on Friday charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Ekpe, who resides in Ajegunle area of Apapa, is facing a charge of unlawful assault.

The prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 13 at Nosamu Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos.

Elibeh said that the accused assaulted the police officer, Femi Ademola, while he was carrying out his lawful duty.

He alleged that the complainant stopped the accused to interrogate him on why he was driving recklessly.

“The complaint said that when he confronted the accused he became angry and started throwing punches at him,’’ he said.

Elibeh said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Section 171 prescribed a three-year jail term for offenders.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till July 6 for mention.
