Great Britain’s Adam Peaty set a world record in the heats for the men’s 100m breaststroke at the Rio Olympic Games.

Peaty, 21, clocked 57.55 seconds to break his own world record of 57.98, as he finished 1.36 seconds ahead of the second fastest qualifier.

Compatriot Ross Murdoch (59.47) also reached the semis (03:08 BST Sunday).

Earlier, GB’s James Guy, Max Litchfield, Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott reached their respective 400m finals.

Scottish swimmer Murdoch, 22, finished third in his 100m breaststroke heat – but acknowledged his result was overshadowed by team-mate Peaty’s world record.

“It was just Adam’s race.” Murdoch said. “It was a world record, it was great.

“If you look at the trends in swimming down the years, there’s a build-up in an event and that’s been happening since London, a build-up of people going 59 lows and 58 highs and all of a sudden, one just emerges and bursts from the pack and that’s Adam this time.
