The Dep. Gov of Nasarawa State, Mr Silas Agara, has been commended by some Lafia residents for consistently obeying traffic regulations while driving around the state capital.

The residents made their opinion known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Thursday in Lafia.

Mr Donatus Nadi, a resident of Lafia and state Correspondent of Leadership newspapers, described the deputy governor’s attitude as an exemplary step from a good leader.

He explained that many lives had been lost due to the reckless driving by the motorcade of some political leaders, which according to him has been a cause for concern on Nigerian highways.

“It is an exemplary thing to do. I am very satisfied and proud of him.

“He has shown exemplary leadership because some of our leaders usually flaunt traffic laws thereby causing dangerous driving and accidents on our roads,” he said.

Mr Clement Agu, a teacher and resident in the state capital, also expressed joy and urged commercial drivers across the country to emulate the public servant by obeying traffic regulations at all times.

“Yesterday he passed through this same junction and he stopped for the light. Today he has done it again. It shows a change in the mindset of some our leaders beginning to manifest. I admire his attitude,” he said.

On his part, Mr Cheke Emmanuel, Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nasarawa state chapter, however, appealed for a paradigm shift in the attitude of Nigerian leaders towards traffic regulations.

“Gone are the days that leaders will flaunt traffic regulations. There should be a paradigm shift especially in violation of traffic regulations,” he said.

Emmanuel, who described Agara as a patriotic citizen, said the deputy governor should be commended and urged other leaders to take a cue from him.

“This is someone who obeys laws of the land. Our leaders should not be exempted from obeying our laws,” he said.
