Three in court for attacking policeman

Three men on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly injuring a policeman with a broken bottle as they tried to evade the law.

The accused, Chiadikaobi Jonah, 28, Monday Chukwu, 35 and Chigbo Victor, 33, of unknown addresses, are facing a four-count charge bordering on assault.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor, the accused persons, on Aug. 22, at Ladipo Road, Mushin, Lagos, unlawfully assaulted Sgt. Lawrence Audu with a broken bottle.

“The accused, who were trying to evade the law, hit the sergeant on the head with a bottle, inflicting injuries on his head while in the course of carrying out his duty,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 172, 166 and 404 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The three accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Magistrate F. A. Azeez granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate said that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment and each must deposit N10,000 with the court.

Azeez, thereafter, adjourned the case till Sept. 20 for mention.
