The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Saturday staged a road show campaign to mark the August Environmental Sanitation in Lagos in collaboration with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

The road show which kicked off at the Corporation’s headquarters took the NRC officials through Ahmadu Bello Way, Akintola St., Federal Road, Awolowo Road and Oke-Ira area of Ebute Meta.

In an interview, Mr James Zang, NRC Deputy Director, Research, Health, Safety and Environmental Services, (RHSES), said that the road show was meant to create awareness.

According to him, the aim of the road show is to create awareness on the need for people, especially the residents of Ebute Meta, to participate in the monthly sanitation.

“It was observed that residents do not come out to clean their surroundings during the short-time of sanitation.

“We should know that cleanliness is next to Godliness. We have to keep our environment clean and it should be communal efforts.

“The management is very serious about it and will henceforth be strict with those who refuse to partake in the clean-up exercise.

“The management is also very serious on the cleanliness of the compound because a dirty environment affects the health of a person.

“We do not want our workers to always complain of ill health,’’ Zang said.

Also, the NRC Assistant Director, RHSES, Mr Oyekunle Oyewole, said that sanitation should be daily business rather than being a monthly affair.

In her comments, the Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Dr Yewande Jinadu, said that the hospital’s collaboration with the NRC was meant to show that cleanliness was good for healthy living.

Jinadu, represented by Mr Femi Ayoola, the FMC Public Relations Officer, called on the residents to always promote clean environment to prevent infestation of rats in their surroundings.

“Let us avoid anything that will endanger our health and environment, especially rats. Lassa fever is looming again, and we must be proactive to keep safe,’’ she said.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr Ademuyiwa Adejokun, sought the collaboration of the NRC with the authority to ensure a clean environment.

Adejokun, represented by Mrs Olaide Bello of LAWMA Advocacy Department, urged residents to cultivate the habit of putting their wastes in a bag, instead of dumping them indiscriminately by the road sides.

The families of Mr Gregory Ejike, Alhaji Abba Gumel and Mr Ezeugo Patani were given awards for their proactive action in cleaning their environments during Saturday sanitation.

Gumel, who spoke on behalf of the recipients, appreciated the NRC and LAWMA for the award, promising to encourage other residents to be proactive in cleaning their environments.

Free waste bags were also distributed to the residents during the show.
