Onifade Adeyemi and Ayombalo Ademola, who allegedly attempted to murder a pregnant woman in Lagos, are to cool their heels in prison, a court ruled on Tuesday.

An Apapa Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said the duo should be kept behind bars until their bail conditions were met.

Adeyemi, 55, and Ademola, 58, both of Ajegunle area of Apapa, are being tried for conspiracy, attempt to murder and attempt to procure an abortion.

According to the prosecution, the accused attempted to abort the three-month-old pregnancy of a woman in their clinic.

The two accused with another man still at large conspired to commit the offences sometime in December 2015, Insp. Elibeh Tony told the court.

He said the incident took place at a clinic in Ikotun, a Lagos suburb.

“The accused and another man at large attempted to unlawfully kill Ugo Elizabeth by carrying out a surgery on her which is not their job.”

He alleged that the accused while trying to procure an abortion administered a poisonous or noxious substance on the pregnant woman and also cut her intestine.

“The woman is still lying critically ill in the hospital,” Tony said.

The offences contravened Sections 145 (1), 228 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

The Magistrate, Mr T. Abolarinwa, granted them a N300,000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

One of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and must be gainfully employed, he added.

The case has been adjourned to Oct. 10.
