To mark the country’s 56th Independence anniversary, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State has granted pardon to nine convicts in the Port Harcourt prisons.

This is sequel to the advise of the Rivers State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and pursuant to the powers conferred on him by section 212 (1) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

The pardon is contained in a government statement signed by Emmanuel C. Agumagu, SAN, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.

Agumagu said those granted reprieve were either sentenced to death or life imprisonment.

The beneficiaries include: Chukwuemeka O. Emeka (Life Imprisonment), Akara Etteh (Life Imprisonment) Emmanuel Ihenebiri (Life Imprisonment), Samuel Amadi (Life Imprisonment), Sgt. James Mordi (Life Imprisonment)
6. Tochukwu Chukwu (Life Imprisonment)

Those on death roll and ganted pardon are: Goddy David Faghawari (Death), Kendu Uffort (Death), Emmanuel David Ekanem (Death).

The statement said that by virtue of the pardon, ”the Controller of Prisons, Port Harcourt is authorized and commanded to, upon the receipt of the Instrument signed under the hand of His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, the Governor of Rivers State on the 1st day of October 2016, to discharge the above named persons from the Port Harcourt Prisons by releasing them and the said instrument shall be a sufficient warrant for so doing”.
