The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra, said on Friday that majority of motorists were yet to comply with the installation of Speed Limit Device in their vehicles.

The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Sunday Ajayi, made this disclosure in Awka.

Ajayi said that since the installation deadline elapsed on Oct. 1, only 18 vehicles out of the 328 vehicles checked in Anambra had installed the device.

Ajayi said the compliance level was not encouraging in spite of the massive awareness campaigns on the need for motorists, especially fleet operators to install the device in their vehicles.

He said the command would intensify its “advisory enforcement” team to ensure that motorists migrate to the digital speed control platform to reduce the carnage caused by speeding.

“We have begun the enforcement of compliance on the installation of Speed Limiter, which became effective on Oct. 1.

“But at this stage, the enforcement is advisory because no penalty is levied for now to awaken the people that it has started.

“In the first three days of patrol in Anambra command, we have checked 328 vehicles randomly and only 18 had the device and that represents about 5.5 per cent compliance.

“You will agree with me that this is rather poor, considering the level of awareness we have made so far on this issue.

“However, we are not relenting in our efforts because of its benefits to traffic safety.

“We will continue to engage stakeholders, especially commuter bus companies and heavy duty truck owners,” he said.
