Mrs Ijeoma Egbuna, a retired Secondary School Guidance and Counselling officer, has advised parents and guardians to monitor their children and wards to prevent them from unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

Egbuna, who retired from Federal Government College, Enugu, said in Enugu on Wednesday that the rate of unwanted pregnancy and abortion among female youths was alarming.

The expert said that parents and guardians could prevent this by collaborating with teachers in the campaign against promiscuous life among secondary school children.

According to her, this trend among girls poses a danger to the families and society as well as to the lives of girls involved in abortion due to unwanted pregnancy.

The counsellor further advised parents and guardians to monitor the company their children and wards keep to prevent them from going astray.

Besides, she advised parents to maintain communication between them and the children in order to gain their confidence and make them open up on challenges of adolescence.

”With adequate communication with the children; these young ones would always open up to their parents to discuss every issue. The children will feel free to discuss with their parents instead of being misled by peer groups,’’ she said.

She also urged parents to keep watch over their children, particularly the females, give them good education and teach them the way of God to make them better citizens.
