The Anambra Government says it will institutionalise vocational education and promote education for employment through the accreditation of four technical colleges in the state.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, said this in Awka on Friday during an interaction with newsmen.
She said that the state government was focused on developing education for employment, as against the usual form of learning where students and graduates lack the basic technical know-how.
She said that the present government inherited 11 non-accredited technical colleges, in which four were near moribund.
The commissioner said the colleges had been renovated and satisfactorily equipped.
“They are awaiting approval and accreditation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE),’’ Omenugha said.
She further explained that the government embarked on the massive revamping of all technical colleges to facilitate the development of youths.
“They would be able to have the technical know-how and consequently contribute to the economy of the state and Nigeria in general,” she added.
Omenugha explained that Gov. Willie Obiano, at inception, classified the intervention of his administration in education sector into three.
According to her, the interventions are in the areas of provision of educational infrastructure, welfare of teachers, and welfare of students.
She commended the governor for his commitment to the provision of quality education to the state’s school-going children.
Omenugha expressed optimism that the education for employment approach of the government would help to produce more entrepreneurs to reduce unemployment in the society.
