A medical expert, Dr Ugwu Ejiofor, has revealed that regular exercise and proper meal planning remains the key to managing diabetes.

Ejiofor, who is an Endocrinologist at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, (ESUTH), said in Enugu on Tuesday that constant exercise was important for people’s overall well being.

He said that when one engaged in exercise, the cells become more sensitive and help insulin to work more effectively in the system.

“When you exercise your body, your cells become more sensitive to insulin so it can work more efficiently. Your cells also remove glucose from your blood stream,’’ he said.

He urged patients with diabetes to try as much as possible to eat more of natural food and avoid processed and fatty food.

“Avoid lots of refined and processed food with little or no fibre and go for natural food that our fathers and our fore-fathers used to eat.

“Also, avoid food that contains more of cholesterol, we advise that people should shy away from highly processed food. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables; if you do all these, it will go a long way to reduce diabetes.’’
