Woman nabbed for phone theft

A 21-year-old woman, Abidemi Omotowon, who allegedly stole a phone worth N10,000 and N10,000 cash, was on Thursday released on bail on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, who gave the ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N10, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Nwachukwu said the surety should provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The accused, a resident of No. 12 Araromi Oke-Ode St., Orile-Iganmu, Lagos is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.‎

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge preferred against her.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences at No. 12 Araromi Oke-Ode St., Orile-Iganmu, Lagos at about 5.00 p.m on Dec. 14.

‎She alleged that the accused who lived in the neighbourhood with the complainant, Oluwakemi Amadi, walked a friend out of the street and before her return, the accused had entered her apartment and stolen a Nokia phone valued at N10,000 and N10,000 cash.

The accused, who was seen by neighbours, told the complainant that she was seen around her premises.

When the complainant went to the residence of the accused, the items were not found but a Tecno phone was found in her custody, reasonably suspected to have been stolen, as the accused could not give a proper account of the phone.‎

The offences contravened Sections 285(1), 285(1), 306(1), and 327(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The magistrate adjourned the case to Jan. 8, for mention.
