Man in court over N35,000 spiritual fraud

A 33-year-old man, Godwin Akpan, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N35,000 on the pretext of solving a spiritual problem .

Akpan, who lives at Alakuko area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused collected N35, 000 from Charity Peter on the pretext of assisting her to solve her brother’s spiritual problem.

“But the accused failed to fulfill his part of the agreement he made with Peter, the complainant,’’ the prosecutor said.

Samuel said that the accused also stole the complainant’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card, withdrew N190, 000 without her consent and made away with the money.

He said that the offences were committed sometime in October, 2016 on Bale Street, Meiran in Lagos.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mr A.O. Onilogbo, granted N50,000 bail to the accused with two sureties in like sum.

Onilogbo adjourned the case to Jan. 30.
