Some residents of Gowon Estate, a Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, have complained about wrong delivery of mails to residential buildings by officials of the Nigerian Postal Service (Nipost).

The residents, who spoke on Monday in Lagos, decried the manner with which the Nipost officials dump mails at particular buildings without dispatching them to specified addresses.

They, however, called for the intervention of the Postmaster General to halt such lackadaisical attitude to work.

Mr Abimbola Tunde said the manner of mails delivery has left people to lose their mails since they were dispatched to wrong buildings.

“For some weeks now, I was expecting an important letter but did not receive it and contacting the source where it was supposed to emanate from and eventually got a copy sent to my e-mail address.

“I did not find this situation funny at all because it put on pressure on me.

“ I have missed very important mails and the purpose of the mails were defeated and because of the long delay I couldn’t reply,’’ Taiwo said.

Micah Jackson, another resident, said that he received his mail from a resident of another building because they were able to identify his names.

“I am fed up with all these nonsense. I can imagine why and how I cannot get my mails to my address.

“I wonder why residents of another compound should be the one helping to deliver mails and that is if they know who you are,’’ he said.

Susan Adamu, a retired civil servant, also said she almost lost an important appointment if not that a concerned neighbour found the mail that she had been expecting for long in his block in another close on a different road.

“I can’t imagine why our mails won’t get to our addresses; it doesn’t speak well of Nipost.

“ I almost missed an important meeting, if my neighbour had not found my mails.

“That is how I will miss something big that will be beneficial to me all in the name of dumping and mixing up mails,’’ she said.

Another resident, Rachael Agu, who also complained of the irregularities of Nipost officials, said that she had not seen her mails in a long while, adding that she had stopped using her house address.

“I have given up on Nipost. It doesn’t help matters, it rather makes it worse,’’ she said.

Contacted, Mrs Taiwo Ajayi, Area Postal Manager, Lagos Mainland Territory, confirmed that some letters were delivered to wrong addresses.

According to her, some Nipost staff newly posted to Gowon Estate area are currently undergoing training.

Ajayi, however, noted that most houses or buildings within the estate were not properly numbered and had contributed to the situation where some customers’ letters were taken to wrong addresses.

“All Nipost dispatch staff were given the orientation to return undelivered letters to the office for proper transfer to their owners as a core mandate of Nipost,’’ Ajayi said.

She advised the residents to ensure that their blocks of flats were clearly marked for easy identification and safe delivery of mails.
