The NYSC Coordinator in Plateau, Mrs Olufunmilayo Akin, says 700 corps members, who are graduates of agriculture and allied courses, have been posted to Plateau on the request of Gov. Simon Lalong.
The coordinator made this known on Tuesday in Jos when she led some NYSC officials on a courtesy visit to the governor.
Akin said that the governor made the request when the Director-General of NYSC visited the state last year.
“This is in line with our contribution to the agricultural sector and your desire to develop the sector,’’ she said.
Akin announced that 8,399 corps members were currently serving in the state, with 2,906 of them undergoing orientation at the NYSC Orientation Camp.
Akin said that there were 1,038 male corps members in the camp, while the remaining 1,058 were females.
The coordinator commended the governor for his commitment toward the welfare of the youth, particularly the corps members, in the state.
She also extolled the governor for erecting a befitting NYSC orientation camp and augmenting the allowance set aside for the feeding of corps members in the camp.
Akin also lauded Lalong for initiating numerous development projects in the state.
She informed the governor that Plateau would be hosting 10 states in the coming NYSC cultural and sports festival.
She said that the festival, which would start on Feb. 19, was aimed at fostering unity and peaceful coexistence in the country.
Responding, Lalong thanked the NYSC authorities for granting his request for agriculture graduates which, he said, was in line with the Federal Government’s resolve to improve the agricultural sector.
The governor, however, urged corps members to accept their posting to wherever their services would be needed most in order to contribute to the country’s development in a pragmatic way.
He pledged continued support for corps members posted to the state.
Lalong assured the NYSC coordinator that construction works in some parts of the orientation camp, which were discontinued last year, would soon resume.
He also said that the state government would soon redeem its pledge to donate a bus to the NYSC.
