Lanre Ogundipe, former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Thursday enjoined journalists to intensify public enlightenment on causes and prevention of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) and other killer diseases.

Ogundipe gave the task in Dakwa while reacting to the outbreak of Meningitis in some parts of the country.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed the outbreak of CSM in five states, with at least 282 deaths related to the disease.

“It is sad that we are losing our young people who are the future of this country to some preventable diseases.

“Prevention is better than cure; therefore journalists both from electronic and print media must be in the forefront, leading sensitisation campaign against all killer and preventable diseases.

“We must sensitise the general public through our media on how to prevent the spread of some of these diseases,” he said.

Ogundipe visited Dakwa in the FCT to console a former Photo Editor of Daily Times, Mr Sunday Tumo, whose 22-year-old daughter died of meningitis on Tuesday.
