Reps urge FG to establish more Special Colleges of Education

The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to establish more Special Colleges of Education to cater for the education needs of physically-challenged persons.

This call followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Emmanuel Akpan (Akwa Ibom-PDP).

Moving the motion, Akpan noted with concern that only one Special College of Education existed in the country in spite of a large number of physically-challenged persons.

According to the lawmaker, the college, located in Oyo, does not produce enough teachers for the special needs of students.

The lawmaker said that with the needed support, physical-challenged students would become useful members of the society.

“By establishing more Colleges of Education to train people with special needs, the rate of destitution and begging across the country will be drastically reduced,’’ Akpan said.

The motion was unanimously adopted and the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, mandated the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, to ensure implementation and report back to the house within eight weeks.
