Governor Nyesom Wike has expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work at the Faculty of Management Sciences and Faculty of Environmental Sciences buildings of the Rivers State University and summoned the contractor to Government House.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Blessing Didia and the Management were told to correct the defects observed during his inspection of the buildings within two weeks.
The governor was also pissed off by the environmental condition of the school, especially the overgrown weeds and littering of the entrance of the University by traders, food vendors and others.
Wike directed all the affected traders to vacate the area immediately. Failure to heed his order, he warned, the state government would evacuate them.
The governor directed the contractor handling the College of Medical Sciences to report to the Government House to explain the slow pace of work.
Governor Wike also threatened to withhold the N500 million earmarked for the institution if no appreciable job was done with funds earlier released to it for development.
Sources at the institution told our correspondent that the management was jolted by the governor’s reaction after inspecting the works being carried out in the institution.
The governor, it was learnt, promised to provide funds for the institution to ensure that all courses of the institution were accredited by relevant academic bodies.
The governor used the occasion to announce that Saturday, April 1, 2017 will be the last day that the institution would be known as Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) as the change of name passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly will take effect. The University will henceforth be known as Rivers State University.
