Man rapes N40,000 a night sex worker on Awolowo Road Ikoyi

A 40-year old jobless man, Edet Imoh, who is currently facing two cases of rape at the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos has been arrested again for allegedly raping a sex worker, Ejiro Umukoro, without her consent along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos at about 2.30am.

The suspect was arrested by the police at the Onikan division, Ikoyi, Lagos.

After investigation by Sergeant Orifa Olugbenga and his team, the suspect of no fixed address, was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of rape.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Nichola Akpene, told the court in charge No. O/21/2017 that the suspect committed the alleged offence on 11 March, 2017 on Awolowo road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Akpene informed the court that the complainant reported to the police that the accused approached her for Till Day Break, TDB, sex and she charged him the sum of N40,000.

She stated that the accused claimed that he resides on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi in Lagos and chartered a taxi which took both of them to the place. She said that when they got to Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, the suspect told the driver to stop and they alighted from the car.

Akpene alleged that the complainant said that before she knew what was happening, the accused held her neck from behind, wrestled her to the ground and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her along Awolowo road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

”The complainant stated that her screaming for help attracted policemen on patrol and before they came down from their van the suspect took her two phones valued at N145,000 and escaped.

”The complainant stated further that nemesis caught up with the accused when he came back to the club to approach another woman for sex. She held him and raised an alarm which attracted the club management who assisted her to take the suspect to the station,” the policeman stated

Akpene said during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that he had raped three sex workers along Awolowo road, Ikoyi, Lagos on three occasions and that he is currently facing two cases of rape at the Igboere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

He said the suspect blamed his action on a curse placed on him from his village.

Akpene said the offences accused committed by the accused are punishable under sections 260 and 286 of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime and Magistrate J. O. A. Adepoju admitted him on bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till 16 May, 2017 for mention while the defendant was taken to Ikoyi prison.
