The number of people who died on Tuesday when a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in northern Philippines had risen to 26, a local disaster relief official said.

Michael Calma, an officer at the Provincial Disaster Relief Office informed newsmen.

“No fewer than 22 more people have been injured in the accident that occurred in Carranglan town in Nueva Ecija Province, about 150 kilometres north of Manila.

“Among those killed were 18 female passengers, seven males and a child,” Calma told newsmen, adding that the two additional fatalities succumbed while being treated in the hospital.

Robert de Guzman, a senior town police official, said bystanders saw the speeding bus fell into a ravine over 100 metres high in the village of Capintalan.

“Initial reports said there were 40 people aboard the bus.

“The injured victims have been rushed to nearby hospitals, while investigators were still determining the cause of the accident,’’ Guzman added.
