In a bid to empower youths in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia, the council has acquired a Division 2 club side in the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NNWL-1).

The Chairman of the council, Mr Hanson Amaechi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday on the sidelines of his visit to Mr Ebere Amaraizu, Director in-charge of South-East Zone of NNWL-1 Board in Enugu.

He described the acquisition of Cannon FC of Obingwa as an indication of the positive developments underway in the council under his watch.

According to the chairman, part of his youth programmes include development and empowerment of youths for self reliance.

“The council acquired a football club to encourage the development of youths in sports.

“This would empower youths of Obingwa area to be positively engaged in sports in order to attain greater heights in life,’’ he said.

He thanked Amaraizu for his efforts at acquiring the football club, saying this would help develop talents in the council area.

Amaechi called on the council to rally round and ensure that the club got the deserved attention as Abia was known for its exploits in sports development.

The club is expected to commence screening of players on Thursday at the council secretariat at Mgboko.

It was also gathered that the management of Crime Busters FC, Enugu, had offered to assist with technical support for the new club.

The NNWL-1 season would commence on May 4 across the federation as approved by its congress held on April 12 in Abuja.
