Mrs Betty Akeredolu, the wife of the Ondo State governor, says institutions providing training for the physically challenged should be given attention.
Akeredolu, who spoke at the launch of two books at the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, said it was necessary to train teachers who could, in turn, teach persons with disabilities in the state.
The books were written by Mr Kalu Ugbo, a lecturer in the school.
She said: “Let me assure everyone that my take home message to my husband, the governor, is there is an institution like FCE Special Oyo that is training physically challenged persons on how to get on in life.
“To the best of my knowledge, there are gross inadequate human resources of teachers who can, in turn, teach physically challenged children in Ondo State.
“Believe me, I am going to ensure that Ondo State makes the best use of the great opportunity of knowledge transfer and skills acquisition in FCE Special (Oyo).
“I strongly believe in not just giving people fish, but in teaching people how to fish so as to be independent.”
In his address at the occasion, Prof. Olayiwola Usman, the school’s Provost, urged other lecturers to be innovative and hard working as the author of the books.
Usman solicited the assistance of the Ondo State Government as well as all well meaning individuals during the 40th anniversary of the college billed for October.
Ugbo, who had earlier said that he derived inspiration from students and colleagues in the college, expressed gratitude to all those who encouraged him during the writing project.
The two books are “Understanding Special Needs Education ‘’ and “The poultry Child.’’
